Should You Move to A New House During Ghost Month?

BY Meagan Wenceslao ON Aug 16, 2019

Legend has it that the gate of hell opens on the first day of the seventh month of the traditional Chinese calendar. Hence, the seventh month of the lunar calendar is commonly called ghost month. Is it good to move in the seventh month?  If the answer is no, how to fix it?

Well, this month is considered to be unlucky, so Chinese people would not hold great events in this period and moving is thought to be improper in this month.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU MUST MOVE DURING THE GHOST MONTH?

The Chinese usually burn paper money, paper cars and paper houses in front of their houses, or in an offering table, as offering to the ghosts.

The Ghost Month is also usually associated with bad luck, and historically, a lot of calamities and tragedies happen in August. So to prepare, here are some things you can do and you can avoid:

1. Light an Incense Stick

You can light nine sticks of incense and go through each room in the house. This practice is believed to cleanse the spaces and the negative energy. You can do this every week during the Ghost Month.

2. Display you Good Luck charms

There are many Feng Shui amulets and symbols that you can display or carry with you during ghost month. One of this is the "ghost catcher" or Chung Kwei (sometimes Zhong Kui), which is a statue of a Chinese mythological figure that vanquishes evil spirits.

3. Keep your home well lit

Wandering ghosts are said to be attracted to dark and gloomy spaces. Keep a table lamp or any light source turned on in common areas. As much as possible, replace the faulty bulbs and make sure they are in good working condition.

4. DON'T do major construction or renovation work

Spirits get attracted to noise, so save the major works that entail a lot of drilling, grinding, naling and banging to another month. Limit the repairs to simple essential touchups -- there is no need to delay that leaky faucet or broken light bulb (which will make your house dark anyway, and that's unlucky).

5. Don't hold parties

Holding housewarming and other celbratory events in your home could inadvertently invite wandering spirits. This, however, doesn't mean you should stay gloomy for a month. Check a condo for rent in Makati where you can use their amenities so you can. host your events there.

6. Just don't travel or move houses... yet

Do you have a trip scheduled this August? You should consider rescheduling it after the ghost month. Instead of traveling, you can stay in your resort-style condo in Taguig. There's an open lawn for an afternoon picnic or relaxing tea party.

You may think that superstitious beliefs are irrelevant in this day and age. But as long as no harm is done on others, what's wrong with adding a couple of good luck charms in your living room to fight off negative energies? It's a Chinese folk belief but as we like to say, better safe than sorry.

For the mean time, you can talk to an agent and get their opinion on the best houses for sale in Manila or condo for rent in BGC. Or you may want to check on your own too by visiting Earthauz.
